Fireflies and Whoopie Pie: Helping Harvest, Hunger, and Food Insecurity

Hunger is a problem that is pervasive across the country, and it comes in many different forms. From food insecurity, struggling to feed your children, and food deserts, millions of families struggle with hunger every single day. And for those families, food banks offer a lifeline for survival. Every single county in the country has food insecurity, with 49 million Americans — including 13 million children — struggling with hunger and food insecurity. That’s 1 in 5 children. As a mother, there are few scenarios worse than constantly fearing how you will be able to feed your children each day. Yet for countless families, that’s the reality, especially for people of color. Rural counties are also significantly more likely to face food insecurity. And hunger can have a devastating effect on children; it can lead to poor performance in school, health problems, and slower development.

Helping Harvest is a local food bank, serving the Berks and Schuylkill Counties, and on this week’s episode of Fireflies and Whoopie Pie, Krista Renenger joins us to talk about how hunger and food insecurity are affecting families in South Central PA, and how Helping Harvest is working to help them — as well as what you can do to make a difference.
