Fall is the favorite time of year for many people, and there’s no shortage of reasons: the cooler air, the holidays, and of course, the gorgeous colors. There’s something a bit magical about fall foliage, and that’s definitely true of the fall foliage right here in South Central PA.

Generally, the fall foliage for our area will begin to change colors in October. It’s a gorgeous time of year, and if you’re looking for ideas to take the beautiful colors in, we’ve got some fantastic suggestions. And as Pennsylvania has one of the longest and most varied fall foliage season in the country — and the world! — there are plenty of opportunities to get outdoors and see it all.

Fall Foliage in Berks County

  • The Reading Pagoda: Reading’s most recognizable landmark, its location atop Mount Penn gives you fantastic views of Reading and Berks County.
  • Hawk Mountain: Not only can you see the autumn leaves, but fall is the best time of year to spot the hawks as they migrate!
  • Gring’s Mill: The historic homestead will make a fantastic backdrop for the season.
  • The Pinnacle: One of the most popular spots in Berks County on Instagram, this is the high point of the Blue Mountain Ridge and offers some of the best views in the area.
  • Hopewell Lake: Located within French Creek State Park, there’s no entrance fee and the reflection of the fall leaves in the water is one you won’t want to miss.

Fall Foliage in Cumberland County

  • Pine Grove Furnace State Park: Hiking along the Appalachian Trail, on the shores of two lakes, give plenty of chances to see gorgeous fall colors.
  • Michaux State Forest: Another stop along the Appalachian Trail will offer a variety of views… and you can drive through the Long Pine Run Reservoir, the Dark Hollow Vista, and the Appalachian Trail if your want to see it all without getting all the kiddos out of the car.
  • Waggoner’s Gap Hawk Watch: Atop Kittatinny Ridge, you’ll see thousands of birds migrate over the colorful trees for a truly incredible experience.
  • Colonel Denning State Park: Located on a gorgeous lake, our advice is to take the Flat Rock Trail and be rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view.
  • Kings Gap Environmental Education Center: Thousands of acres of stunning views can be found, though one of the best is the view of Cumberland Valley from the Cameron-Masland Mansion.
  • Dickinson College: You don’t need to be a student here to enjoy the scenery; the historic campus is surrounded by trees, giving you some breathtaking sights to take in.

Fall Foliage in Dauphin County

  • Capitol Complex: The historic Capitol building is surrounded by trees and located on the Susquehanna River, making for beautiful views.
  • Riverfront Park: Not only can you catch views on the Susquehanna, you’ll also be able to see the fall colors on City Island and Blue Mountain from this gorgeous park.
  • Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat: Take in 360 degree views of fall views of the mountains, the Harrisburg riverfront, and much more.
  • Little Buffalo State Park: Enjoy the changing colors of the forest while also exploring the covered bridges and historic stone mill.
  • Hershey Gardens: Not only can you see fall leaves here, but there are thousands of mums and other fall flowers for some truly spectacular views.

Fall Foliage in Lancaster County

  • Chickies Rock County Park: Take a climb atop Chickies Rock, rising 100 feet above the Susquehanna, which will give you panoramic views of York county, Lancaster County, and Marietta.
  • The Pinnacle Overlook: Nearly 400 feet above the Susquehanna, it’s easily accessible, meaning it won’t be too difficult for the kids to get to when you’re exploring.
  • Lititz Springs Park: In the middle of historic Lititz, this park has a lovely creek, gazebo, fountains, and more, for incredible fall views.
  • Covered Bridge Tour: Take in the views of the Lancaster countryside from the climate-controlled comfort of your car, with one of the most well-known symbols of South Central PA.

Fall Foliage in Lebanon County

  • Governor Dick: Climb the Governor Dick tower and get a birds-eye view of the fall colors across five counties.
  • Swatara State Park: Hike through the rolling fields between two mountains, with Grigg’s Falls at Bordner’s Cabin a particular highlight for beautiful fall scenery.
  • Memorial Lake State Park: Soak up mirror images on the peaceful lake from the fall-colored trees, with a stroll across the damn a particular highlight.
