It’s still freezing out right now, but before we know it, the sun will be shining, the temperature will be warming, and our kiddos will be on spring (or, heaven forbid, summer!) break. And while it’s a known fact that Pennsylvania is one of the most beautiful states in the country – we’ve got mountains, waterfalls, and lakes galore – sometimes, you just need a beach escape.
While there are no beaches here in South Central PA, the good news is we’re very close to tons of great places to escape, including states with some gorgeous shorelines to offer, and we’ve found all the best beaches nearby for a quick weekend getaway or spring break vacation.

Cape May, New Jersey
Just short of three hours away, Cape May beaches are full of family friendly fun! It’s known as a hugely popular beach getaway, lined with gorgeous Victorian mansions and cozy shops and restaurants alike. They’re known for a safe, clean atmosphere and a wide variety of beaches to explore – from popular spots, like Cove Beach, to more intimate areas or places to enjoy surfing or fishing. And, of course, you can walk the Cape May Boardwalk or explore Sunset Beach to find the Cape May “diamonds!”
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
Take a quick two and a half hour trek to Delaware and visit Rehoboth Beach, where you’ll find miles of beautiful beaches, bustling shops, a foodie paradise, and vibrant nightlife. While there is more of a party atmosphere at night, during the day your little ones can enjoy the calm water or, in the summer, enjoy free movies on the beach. It’s also dog-friendly, so you can bring your four-legged family members too. There are plenty of family-friendly attractions nearby, like Funland and Jungle Jim’s River Safari Water Park, if you get tired of the sun and sand.
Asbury Park, New Jersey
Drive through Philadelphia to Asbury Park beaches, where you’ll find no shortage of family fun. From volleyball, miniature golf, and basketball to playgrounds and splash pads, there is so much to do, the kids will never get bored. It aLso gets some great waves, for any of the older kids that might want to try their hand at surfing. Be warned, though – this is one popular spot, so it may get crowded if you go during peak season.
Ocean City, New Jersey
Ignore Maryland’s more popular OC, and head to New Jersey instead. Located less than three hours away, this is a famously family-friendly resort area, with an aquarium, amusement park, boardwalk, museums, and so much more. It’s also a dry beach, and has been for nearly 100 years, so this is a great spot to consider if you want to avoid the more… shall we say, raucous spring break crowds.
Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland
This gem is a little over three hours away, and are known to be spacious and calm, perfect for families. The wild horses are a huge treat to see, and you can go hiking, fishing, biking, kayaking… not to mention fantastic nature programs, courtesy of the National Park Service.
Cherry Beach, Maryland
Located near Salisbury, Cherry Beach is about three hours away, and is great for families. You can go fishing and boating, take the kids to play on the nearby playgrounds, or to play some horseshoes. There are picnic tables to make eating packed lunches easier, and pets are welcome as long as they are on a leash.
Ship Bottom Beach, New Jersey
Less than three hours away, Ship Bottom Beach is a great place for families, without a huge party scene. It’s clean and the water is shallow and calm, making it great for younger kids, and there is a playground and pavilion nearby, too. You can go boating, crabbing, and fishing, try body surfing, or enjoy the views from the boardwalk.
Cape Henlopen State Park, Delaware
Being a state park, Cape Henlopen offers more than just a beach. You can spot wildlife like deer, foxes, and bald eagles, ride the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, and explore the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse. You can walk through Fort Miles, rent a bike to explore, and visit the Nature Center, complete with a touch tank. And, of course, we can’t forget the beach!
